Ideas for keeping your Home cool in Summer
Summer is knocking at your doors. During this Lockdown and work from Home, We are spending all our time at home. So keeping your home cool in the summer can be a challenge. It’s very important to make your place cool and pleasant. Here some ideas for how to make your house cooler and help keep your family cool when the temperature rises.
Reduce direct sunlight:
Direct sunlight coming into your home can increase the temperature. Placing curtains or reflective window panels are some of the ways how to keep the sun out of windows. Keeping direct sunlight away from your room will reduce the warmth in the space.
Keep your windows open:
Keep your windows open to allow some natural breeze to blow through the house. This also means you can’t have thick curtains blocking the breeze, have something light and airy so that air can come through freely. Have cotton curtains and use light colours for the best results.
Remove winter accessories:
Woolen Blankets and Heavy curtains are used during winters, it is also time to pack away all those other winter accessories like carpets, heavy blankets. You can also reduce the usage of water heaters and any other furniture that is crowding up your home. Make your space clutter-free, this will also enable good airflow.
Turn Off Lights When Not in Use
Light bulbs produce heat, especially the incandescent ones. If you can’t replace this antiquated type of bulb, the least you can do is minimize their usage. Some homes install solar panels to help minimize the cost of electricity. Its good idea to reduce your electricity bill.
Let the Night Air In
In the summertime, nights air to be much cooler. Make by opening the windows before sleeping. Of course, security should be your primary concern prior to leaving them open the door. Make the necessary preparations like installing grills or just leaving the upper windows open if you live in a two-story house.
Plant Trees:
This may be a long-term plan, but the benefits are also long-term. After a few years, you will be proud of the natural shade you’ve created.
Plant them in locations where you think the sun beats down on your home the hottest, especially during summer.
White roof:
In much the same way the ice/snow reflects UV rays instead of absorbing the heat like the oceans do, white roofs/terraces reflect the heat and help keep the house cool. This is why a coat of white lime wash on a flat terrace can help the slab to remain cool throughout the summer. However, this washes away in the rains, so a reapplication is required every summer.
