    Self-Prevention from Flooding

Recently affected flood after that most of the Chennai peoples have undergone the experience of living in an unplanned city. As the city grew, it occupied most of the water bodies. There are several causes of floods and they differ from region to region. The causes may vary from a rural area to an urban area. Some of the major causes of floods are given below.

    Heavy rainfall:

It is the primary cause for floods in India. Especially, rainfall in a short span of time is of much concern as they are leading to flash floods. Each time there are more rains than the drainage system can take, there can be floods. Sometimes, there is heavy rain for a very short period that result in floods.

    Rivers overflow:

Rivers can overflow their banks to cause flooding. This happens when there is more water upstream than usual, and as it flows downstream to the adjacent low-lying areas, there is a burst and water gets into the land.

Hurricanes, Strong wind in Coastal areas:

Sea water can be carried by massive winds and hurricanes onto dry coastal lands and cause flooding. Sometimes this is made worse if the winds carry rains themselves. Sometimes water from the sea resulting from a tsunami can flow inland to cause damage.

    Dam Breaking:

Dams are man-made blocks mounted to hold water flowing down from a highland. Sometime too much water held up in the dam can cause it to break and overflow the area.

Here are some ways in which we can make the city ready for any eventuality due to incessant rain.

    Repair potholes on the roads:

Some potholes are so big that vehicles may tilt while negotiating the road. So people be aware of roads Condition. During night time its seems to be difficult to travel on roadways

    Use of solar power:

There was no power supply as all power cable boxes were waterlogged and this could have caused a short circuits. People were not able to communicate with others as their phones ran out of charge.

The use of solar power could have prevented this problem. People must install at least 1 kW solar power panels, especially in houses situated in low lying areas. People must also use remote batteries to charge their phones.

    Grow Plants:

Trees, shrubs and grass help protect the land from erosion by flood water. People in low-lying areas must be suggested to use a lot of vegetation to help break the power of moving flood water and also help reduce erosion.

    Transport Services:

There was no access to public transport during heavy flood overflow. This is dangerous as smaller vehicles find it difficult to negotiate potholes, drains, etc. So public transport services must be operated, even if the route is 50 percent clear.

    Retaining walls:

In some places, retaining wells, levees, lakes, dams, reservoirs or retention ponds have been constructed to hold extra water during time of flooding.

    Social Communication:

It is very important to peoples communicate with others about flood condition. In that Situation Social media will help to all to share the details and to help the peoples.

    Town planning:

It is important that builders acquire permission before buildings are erected. This will ensure that waterways are not blocked. Also, drainage systems must be covered and kept free from objects that chock them. This way, water can quickly run through if it rains and minimize any chance of town flooding. Drainage systems should also be covered to prevent litter from getting into them.
